Set in the extensive and beautiful Ecclesall woods, the Woodland Discovery Centre is the perfect indoor and outdoor facility for a spectrum of events and a visit to the woods.  Space is available to hire at the centre for:



The centre runs craft courses all through the year from cider making to wood work skills.  Public events in the autumn and spring celebrate Sheffield’s rich woodland heritage and demonstrates the unique facilities of the centre, as well as providing activities such as story telling, discovering nature and traditional uses of wood in the home and garden.

Introduction to Woodland Coppicing. 9.30 – 4pm, 11/02/2017, £85.00


Coppicing and pollarding are traditional methods of wood-land management, which have been used for generations.



Pyrography for Adults [the Art of Writing with Fire]. 10am – 3pm, 18/02/2017, £85.00


Would you like to have a go at a traditional folk art? Have you ever fancied burning designs into a natural surface such as wood or leather? This course is an introduction to anyone who is interested in the art of woodburning or pyrography.




Hand Felling. 9.30 - 4pm. 25/02/2017. £85.00

Charcoal and biochar making. 9.30 - 4pm. 26/02/2017. £85.00


This will be a day Spent in the lovely surroundings of Ecclesall Woods Sawmill learning about how charcoal and biochar is made.


Leather axe and knife sheath making


Leather axe and knife sheath making. 9.30 - 4pm.  04/03/2017. £95.00


On this day long workshop you will make an axe sheath for your own axe and a knife sheath for a standard Mora style 106/120 carving knife. You will learn how to condition leather, how to finish the edges, how to stitch using two needles and how to set rivets among other techniques during the day.




An introduction to Blacksmithing. 9.30 – 4pm. 05/03/2017. £120.00


On this day course will introduce you to the basics of Blacksmithing and hand forge work. Starting with fire control and hand hammer work, you will learn carbon steel forging and make small objects such as a poker or spoon, you will leave with an authentically hand forged object.



Introduction to Greenwood Craft [3 day course]. 9.30 – 4pm, 24-26/03/2017, £250.00


A 3 day course to introduce you to Green wood craft, using a Pole Lathe, basic craft tools and making simple Rustic furniture.


Bowl and Kuksa carving. 9.30 – 4pm. 01 & 02/04/2017. £140.00


This course is for anyone who has a little experience at carving spoons or has done some axe and knife carving and would like to push themselves with some new projects.


Introduction to Wood Carving for Kids (aged 8+). 10 – 3pm, 12/04/2017, £35.00


Learn to safely use a knife, drawknife and shave horse to create traditional wooden crafts.


Basic bushcraft for kids (aged 8+). 10 – 3pm, 19/04/2017. £35.00


Could you survive in the woods on your own! Learn bushcraft techniques such as shelter building, basic knots and lashing techniques, how to start a fire effectively, how to use a whittling knife to make traditional wooden pegs.

What is Green Wood? Green Wood is freshly felled, still sappy wood. To work it requires a set of simple techniques based on an understanding of how wood reacts - both to the tools, and to the drying and shrinking process.

A Course to introduce you to Green wood craft and how to use a Pole Lathe.  Have you ever wanted to make something amazing but lacked the confidence to have a go?

Bring your idea or work intuitively on the day and begin to discover the techniques to release the carver in you!


Frame Basket Making. 9.30 – 4pm, 04/06/2017. £85.00


Basket making is one of the oldest of all crafts. It pre-dates pottery and cloth weaving, and led to the invention of both. Each student will craft his or her own frame basket. All materials and tools are provided.


Tool Sharpening Course. 9.30 – 4pm, 11/06/2017. £65.00


Learn to sharpen tools effectively - did you know that many tools are sold blunt? Tool sharpening for green woodworking tools, ie axes, drawknives, billhooks, turning tools, chisels, slashers.


Greenwood Spoon Carving. 9.30 – 4pm, 25/06/2017, £85.00


Learn the ancient art of spoon carving in greenwood. A one-day course with Dave Jackson, basic spoon carving is an excellent, relaxing opportunity to get away from it all and do something different for a day, in the peace and tranquillity of our Woodland Craft Area.
