Set in the extensive and beautiful Ecclesall woods, the Woodland Discovery Centre is the perfect indoor and outdoor facility for a spectrum of events and a visit to the woods.  Space is available to hire at the centre for:



The centre runs craft courses all through the year from cider making to wood work skills.  Public events in the autumn and spring celebrate Sheffield’s rich woodland heritage and demonstrates the unique facilities of the centre, as well as providing activities such as story telling, discovering nature and traditional uses of wood in the home and garden.

Blacksmith Course. Make an iron heart or rose.9.30 – 4pm. 10/02/2018.  £140.00


On this day course will introduce you to the basics of Blacksmithing and hand forge work. Starting with fire control and hand hammer work, you will learn carbon steel forging and make small objects such as a poker or spoon, you will leave with an authentically hand forged object.



Introduction to Woodland Coppicing. 9.30–4pm, 10/02/2018, £85.00


Coppicing and pollarding are traditional methods of wood-land management, which have been used for generations.



Pyrography for Adults [the Art of Writing with Fire]. 10am–3pm, 10/02/2018, £85.00


Would you like to have a go at a traditional folk art? Have you ever fancied burning designs into a natural surface such as wood or leather? This course is an introduction to anyone who is interested in the art of woodburning or pyrography.


Pyrography for Kids [the Art of Writing with Fire]. 10am–3pm, 21/02/2018, £35.00

Hand Felling. 9.30-4pm. 25/02/2018. £85.00


Learn how to fell small trees by hand and how to process them ready for use as firewood, craft material and brash.



Charcoal and biochar making. 9.30-4pm. 03/03/2018. £85.00


This will be a day Spent in the lovely surroundings of Ecclesall Woods Sawmill learning about how charcoal and biochar is made.



Leather axe and knife sheath making. 9.30-4pm.  03/03/2018. £100.00


On this day long workshop you will make an axe sheath for your own axe and a knife sheath for a standard Mora style 106/120 carving knife. You will learn how to condition leather, how to finish the edges, how to stitch using two needles and how to set rivets among other techniques during the day.

This course can be a stand alone course or can be booked alongside the introduction to blacksmithing. You will learn the basics of blacksmithing and hand forge work and create you very own knife!

Bronze Smelting & Casting. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 10/03/2018, £85.00


Looking at the evidence for the first use of metals. It reviews the archaeological evidence and considers the problems for those wishing to reconstruct the processes.


Willow Garden Structures. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 17/03/2018, £97.00


Willow is an amazing plant. A cut stem can re-root and grow through just being pushed in the ground. It grows incredibly quickly, is tactile, flexible and a joy to work with.


Introduction to Greenwood Craft [3 day course]. 9.30 - 4pm, 23-25/03/2018, £250.00


A 3 day course to introduce you to Green wood craft, using a Pole Lathe, basic craft tools and making simple Rustic furniture.


Introduction to Wood Carving for Kids (aged 8+). 10–3pm, 04/04/2018, £35.00


Learn to safely use a knife, drawknife and shave horse to create traditional wooden crafts.


Walking Stick making. 9.30-4pm. 07/04/2018. £85.00


A one day class in the basic skills involved in making your own walking stick.


Make a Rustic 3-Legged Stool. 9.30 – 4pm, 21/04/2018, £85.00


What is Green Wood? Green Wood is freshly felled, still sappy wood. To work it requires a set of simple techniques based on an understanding of how wood reacts - both to the tools, and to the drying and shrinking process.


Introduction to Pole Lathe Turning. 9.30 – 4pm, 29/04/2018, £85.00


A Course to introduce you to Green wood craft and how to use a Pole Lathe. Have you ever wanted to make something amazing but lacked the confidence to have a go?

Stake & Strand Basket Making. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 03/06/2018, £85.00


Basketry making is the weaving of unspun vegetable fibers, usually to form a container. Baskets making done from any wood, vine, leaf, or fiber that could be formed into a desirable shape.


Make a Rustic 4-Legged Jointed Table. 9.30 – 4.00pm, 09 &10/06/2018. £190.00


A 2 day Course to introduce you to Green wood craft, using basic craft tools and making a Rustic table.


Greenwood Spoon Carving. 9.30 – 4pm, 24/06/2018, £85.00


Learn the ancient art of spoon carving in greenwood. A one-day course with Dave Jackson, basic spoon carving is an excellent, relaxing opportunity to get away from it all and do something different for a day, in the peace and tranquillity of our Woodland Craft Area.
