This one day coursewill give you a chance to learn how to make hurdles with Alistair Hayhurst who is a master of this craft.

Hurdles are traditional fence panels that have been used for a variety of different functions over the years, from animal enclosures to walls of houses. This course will give you a chance to learn with Alistair Hayhurst who is a master of this craft.

Based in Wirksworth, Derbyshire Alistair sources his materials from sustainably managed woodlands, coppicing and harvesting the materials he uses during the winter months.

You will learn practical tips and techniques on:

  • Introduction to tools and materials used in hurdle making
  • Woodland management, including Hazel coppicing.
  • Sourcing and grading Hazel
  • Preparing zales (uprights) and base weave
  • Introduction to different methods of splitting hazel

You will go home with a completed woven panel.

Please note you need a good level of manual dexterity in your fingers. You will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear for working outdoors in this season. Steel toe cap boots would be advantageous if you have them.

Refundable up to two weeks prior to course (minus £30 admin fee). No refunds for cancellations within two weeks of course. All adult courses are for 16 years or over.
